Description

Part of me is going ":I pfft, this doesn't need a mature warning" but another part of my is going "... WTH, yes it does". So, on it gooooes, for safety. It's just a little mild gore, nothing too bad. I think. Being a horror writer/artist can mess with your perspective of these things |D

"Dichotomy" is a favorite word of mine right now. I think there's some of it in this picture. Can you find it? 8D

So, argle, this monster is finally done. Been working on this thing to add to my portfolio for pretty much all of break. I think a nice long term goal would be to learn to paint like this WITHOUT it taking this long (I know it's possible, I know people who can do it. You know who you are!)

There's a few issues in terms of perspective (Enemy mine, I will conquer you another day!) that arose from this being just a sketch that I then realized I wanted to make into a full painting. I tend to have perspective issues most when I don't design the background first, but even with those, I think I managed to merge the character into it fairly well.
There's a couple other things I think I'd do differently if I went back and did this again, such as the composition, the way I worked the layers, etc.
But overall, I am still damn thrilled with this piece. It's one of my first pieces I tried to seriously include texture in and has much more dramatic and environment related lighting than past pieces I've done. It was actually really, insanely fun.

So, 1 more portfolio piece down, as much more as I can do before the deadline to go~!

Alchimist, I have to say fits the bill with your dark theme! As you well know they were usually dark figures of history who played around with the darker side of what seemed to be black magic and the unknown, mainly in the search for immortality or the secret to creating gold.
It must have taken you quite a while to paint this, your attention to detail and use of light and shadows really bring the whole image together smoothly. Each time I look that this image I find something new that I have over looked, it has kept me coming back a number of times.
To me personally (I watch a number of serial killer documentaries) a number of them come across as lonely individuals who are seeking an inner part of themselves that has been lost or have never found, I get this feeling with your image. Why has he mutilated himself, what is he searching for?
I find his kitty cat amusing because I think of Dr Evils Fat cat from inspector gadget. Every evil doer needs a feline companion.
Well done, you should be proud!
